F is for Firerock Grille – Gaines Township
And the Frank Lloyd Wright Meyer May house downtown!

A day or two after I dropped my youngest off at college in Marquette, we went for a tour of the FLW Meyer May house. Several years back, Steelcase acquired the house and meticulously restored it back to its original glory. I had toured it once 20 years or so ago, Ray had never been inside.
We are both really into Mid Century Modern styles, and I am really passionate about keeping homes aesthetic close to the original age of the home. I hate seeing gorgeous historic homes that have been renovated out of all of their original character. I do not want to see an all-gray modern inside to a historic home. Therefore, I appreciate the care that Steelcase took to restore the Meyer May house. It was a fun date!
As we pulled up to the house, we saw so many people in the park across the road that were drawing and painting the house. It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, perfect late August weather for the group of people gathered at the park. The tour took about an hour and a half, and included a lot of the history of the house, and the steps that were taken in the restoration process. I mean, it seemed there was no detail too minor for the restoration crew.
After the tour, we went to FireRock Grille. This is also a place we have been to previously; it’s a special place for us as we went there a lot in the early days of our relationship. A lot. We sat inside and watched the Sunday afternoon golfers come from the 18th.
We talked a lot about FLW houses. We had seen a bunch from the outside on a trip to Milwaukee, but this is the only one we’d toured. Some people plan whole trips around FLW houses. I could be that person. Gladly.
Dinner was the same for both of us… A spicy chicken sandwich and chips with diet cokes. So good. So consistent. Yum.
This was a perfect day, a perfect distraction for me after dropping my youngest, my baby, off at college 6.5 hours away.
