D is for Derby Tavern – Hudsonville
Our next adventure was a Friday night after work we headed over to Hudsonville to the Derby Tavern. My first impression wasn’t much; the restaurant was set up within a strip mall in a newer building with no character or personality. It didn’t look that special.
Inside it is nice, newer looking, contemporary. It was busy, but we were able to get a table. The crowd was younger, local, professional. Some families. Not much diversity. Hudsonville.
The server was nice, the food was good. I got a sandwich and fries, as did Ray. I remember thinking the bread was hard, toasted, crunchy. I don’t think we took pictures and I don’t remember what we talked about.
The whole place was not my style. I like old. I like character. I like approachable and authentic. This place was fine. Not my style. Maybe just an off night for us.
Honestly, I think it was just the place I was in mentally and emotionally. We would have went there in July, my youngest had just graduated and we’d had the open house, there were multiple trips north to the college my youngest would be attending, I had a job I wasn’t that thrilled with but wasn’t ready to start looking elsewhere. I just wasn’t in a good space at that time, so maybe that had something to do with my indifference to this place.
Not every place can be a winner every time.
Look at that: I found a picture. I had a mimosa, so it couldn’t have been that bad!
